What are Cataracts caused by?
It is not known why the lens of the eye changes with age and it has not been determined why cataracts develop, but the following possible risk factors have been identified:
• The eye is exposed to ultraviolet light, radiation and air pollution
• Complications from diabetes and steroid use
• Eating a diet high in salt
• Smoking cigarettes and drinking heavily
