Defining EpiLASIK

The EpiLASIK procedure is much like PRK. During the procedure the surface of the cornea is ablated after the epithelium, or flap, is lifted in a single sheet. The repositioned flap then is used along with a bandage contact lens while the cornea heals.

Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA)

Advanced surface ablation is also know as modern photorefractive keratectomy. This laser vision correction procedure is almost like sculpting a contact lens directly on the surface of the eye instead of creating a flap like in the LASIK procedure. This procedure is often used for patients whose corneas are too thin for LASIK.

My eyes get itchy during the spring and summer. Is there anything I can do to make them feel better.

Your first step should be to consult with your eye doctor regarding the possibility of allergies.

Allergies can make patients’ eyes feeling itchy before and after laser vision correction. Prescription oral medication and, in some instances, "allergy relief" eye drops can help alleviate this condition, according to Dr. Sandy T. Feldman.

Are drops like Visine good for your eyes?

Drops like Visine "get the red out." These drops can be problematic because they contain low levels of alcohol, which may worsen the cause of the redness in the eye. Additionally, they contain an agent to constrict the blood vessels, which when it wears off, just get red again.

Because one of the most commonly treated symptoms post laser vision correction is dry eye; our office is dedicated to helping patients be as educated as possible on the symptoms and treatment of the dry eye condition. We recommend particular non preservative eye drops to be used.

Where is the Visian lens placed during surgery?

The Visian lense is an implantable contact lense that can be used to treat patients with a high level of nearsightedness. This lense is implanted in the eye’s posterior chamber between the iris and the eye’s natural lens.

Why can’t highly nearsighted patients have laser vision correction?

Some patients who have a high amount of nearsightedness may not have sufficient corneal thickness to create a flap and then apply the laser which also decreases corneal thickness as it reshapes the cornea itself.

Sometimes, doctors can perform surface laser vision correction procedures such as PRK [photorefractive keratectomy], ASA [advanced surface ablation], LASEK or epi-LASIK. Another option is to the implantable contact lens, such as Visian and Verisyse. The lens can be used to correct vision in highly nearsighted individuals.

What is a high level of nearsightedness?

Severe myopia, or nearsightedness, is considered above -6.00 diopters. A diopter is a unit of measurement of the lens power. The implantable contact lens surgery may be a good choice for some patients with a high level of nearsightedness, according to Dr. Sandy T. Feldman.

What is the difference between Intralase and traditional LASIK?

The Intralase uses a technologically, advanced method to create the thin corneal flap in LASIK. During a traditional LASIK procedure a semi-automated mechanical device, known as a microkeratome, is used to create the flap.

According to Dr. Sandy T. Feldman, during the Intralase procedure, a laser precisely positions a layer of bubbles just beneath the surface of your eye. This generates a smooth even surface after your flap is lifted. The gas bubbles are separated from the tissue to create the flap. With the IntraLase Method, a blade never touches your eye. The Intralase is also computer controlled enabling better precision to control the depth, size and shape of the flap.

What is the Intralase?

The IntraLase Method is a 100% blade-free procedure that is used to perform the critical first step in the LASIK procedure; when the corneal flap is created. After the corneal flap is created, the second step of the LASIK procedure is started. During this step, an excimer laser is used to shape the cornea or front surface of the eye.

What are implantable contact lenses?

Implantable contact lenses also are known as phakic intraocular lens implants. These lenses are implanted without removing your eye’s natural lens, can resemble regular contact lenses or crescent-shaped segments in shape. The lens is placed between the cornea and the iris or just behind the iris.

The lenses treat nearsightedness and are currently being developed to treat farsightedness and astigmatism. To see if implantable lenses are right for you, contact ClearView Eye and Laser Medical Center.
