Treating dry eyes and dry eye syndrome

Windy days and allergies can cause many San Diego residents to have dry eyes.

For some patients, their dry itchy eyes are caused by dry eyes syndrome.  A condition that is defined as the chronic lack of lubrication or moisture in the eye.

When patients experience dry eyes, their eyes are irritated and can feel a constant foreign body sensation.  More serious symptoms include ocular inflammation of the tissues of the eye.

To treat common eye dryness, Dr. Feldman recommends using non-preserved tear drops as a lubricating ointment at bedtime.  A more serious condition might be treated with Restasis, which acts to increase tears.

If drops do not help alleviate the dryness, we can insert small devices known as punctual plugs into one’s tear ducts to retain moisture in the eye.
