Summertime means Sunglasses

With Memorial Day just a few days behind usm it is a good time to remind everyone about the importance of sunglasses. Whether you have had a laser vision correction procedure or not, protecting your eyes is essential here in sunny San Diego.

It has been found that the sun’s ultraviolet rays (also known as UVA and UVB rays) are very damaging to the eyes and can lead to cataracts as well as macular degeneration.

When choosing sunglasses this summer, Dr. Sandy T. Feldman recommends picking a pair with UVA as well as UVB rated protection. According to the Centers for Disease Control, most sunglasses sold here in the US meet these standards. And, for extra protection, consider wearing a hat or visor as well.

What is the WaveScan System?

The WaveScan wavefront system is a computer program that precisely maps the topography of a patient's eye. The WaveScan technology is much like a high-powered telescope and is 25 times more accurate than the machine that ophthalmologists and optometrists have been using since the 1850s to prescribe eyeglasses and contacts.

During the LASIK procedure, the WaveScan map is transferred to the VISX Excimer laser. The exact and precise measurements are used to gently shape the cornea and eliminate visual imperfections giving the patient excellent vision.

Can blurry vision be helped by taking vitamin C?

Dr. Feldman advises her patients to take vitamin C prior to having PRK (also known as Advanced Surface Ablation) and as they are healing.

Dr. Feldman prescribes the vitamin because studies have shown it reduces haze from developing on the cornea after PRK. Vision can become blurred if haze develops.

Vitamin C, as well as other vitamins and minerals, also has been found to reduce the risk or slow the progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration. For more information on which vitamins and minerals are recommended for healthy eyes click on Clearview’s Feast Your Eyes On This page. For more information or questions on PRK, contact us.

A Healthy Diet for your Eyes

As we age, eye issues like cataracts and macular degeneration become more of a concern. For example, it has been found that 10 million American are diagnosed with Age-Related Macular Degeneration each year. This serious eye disease is one of the top causes of vision loss for patients over 65 in the US.
