Great Vision starts with Healthy Eyes

Many patients ask Dr. Feldman what they can do to keep their eyes healthy. A good first step, along with regular eye exams, is to eat a balanced diet. Recent studies have shown that certain antioxidants found in Vitamins A, C, and E can help to protect or slow the progression of eye diseases like Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

LASIK Lets You Leave Your Glasses Behind

LASIK surgery is one of the most common elective surgeries performed. Through laser vision correction, patients are able to reduce their dependence on glasses and/or contact lenses. Studies show that 98% of people achieve 20/20 or better vision after their procedure (results are for individuals with a mild or moderate degree of nearsightedness with or without astigmatism).

Vision Correction with Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA)

Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) is also known as modern photorefractive keratectomy. This laser vision correction procedure is done directly on the surface of the patient’s eye, unlike during the LASIK procedure where a flap or epithelium is created. The ASA procedure is recommended for patients with thin corneas who cannot have LASIK.

Great vision with PRK

Not every patient is a candidate for LASIK. But, great vision is still possible with PRK or Advanced Surface Ablation, as well as EpiLASIK and LASEK. Some reasons a patient may be a candidate for Advanced Surface Ablation rather than LASIK may be because they have thin corneas or participate in contact sports. Another reason could be if a patient is interested in joining the military.

During the PRK procedure, Dr. Sandy T. Feldman gently reshapes the cornea without making the traditional LASIK flap. It does take longer for eye tissue to heal after having PRK treatment and there can be some discomfort, which is managed with eye drops and antibiotic medications.

What does LASIK surgery feel like?

Before surgery the patient is given medication to relax them as well as to drops to sterilize and prepare the eyes for surgery. As the LASIK treatment is being done the patient will feel some slight pressure on the eyes as the LASIK flap is being created. The rest of the LASIK procedure is very easy for the patient, they simply have to continue to focus at a flashing red light as the laser painlessly reshapes the cornea.

After the laser vision correction procedure, it is normal that the eyes may feel gritty for a few days. But, the prescribed antibiotic and lubricating eye drops help the patient eyes feel more comfortable as they heal.

What is iLASIK?

iLASIK combines the IntraLase and Advanced CustomVue procedures for a personalized, custom laser vision correction treatment. Before the iLASIK procedure is done, a WaveScan is done of the eye. A WaveScan maps the imperfections of the patient’s eye in 3-D. Once this information is review by Dr. Sandy T. Feldman a thorough surgery plan is completed.

The iLASIK procedure starts with the IntraLase treatment during which the LASIK flap is made with the IntraLase laser. The flap is gently folded back to expose the cornea of the eye. Then the Advanced CustomVue treatment is done to the cornea utilizing the WaveScan measurements. This step corrects the patient's vision.
