Important Questions to ask during your LASIK Consultation

When a patient is deciding to have LASIK surgery, they have so many questions according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Sandy T. Feldman of ClearView Eyes and Laser Medical Center recommends asking your surgeon these five important questions during your LASIK consultation.

1. Have you thoroughly researched your doctor and are you given an opportunity to speak with their past patients?

2. Has the surgeon treated other doctors, refractive surgeons, inventors of laser refractive technology, athletes, and others that demand high quality vision?

3. Does the surgeon or the medical center have the latest state-of-the-art technology at their offices?

4. Is the doctor’s office environment comfortable for you?

5. Are the doctor’s enhancement rates low and are enhancement fees part of the cost of the laser refractive surgery?

Intralase - All-Laser LASIK

The IntraLase method, or all-Laser LASIK, uses a laser to create the corneal flap instead of the of using a microkeratome, a hand-held tool with an oscillating blade

During the IntraLase treatment, a femtosecond laser carefully creates the corneal flap at a predetermined depth. Once the flap is created, it is gently folded back from the cornea to expose the treatment area.

Because the IntraLase is a much more precise and computer controlled procedure, even patients that have thin corneas, may now be candidates for LASIK.

Eliminating the need for Glasses or Contacts with LASIK

LASIK continues to be one of the most common elective procedures both in the United States and internationally. Millions of patients have eliminated their need for glasses or contacts with this laser vision correction procedure.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, more than 90 percent of people who have LASIK achieve somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40 vision without glasses or contact lenses.

Treating dry eyes and dry eye syndrome

Windy days and allergies can cause many San Diego residents to have dry eyes.

For some patients, their dry itchy eyes are caused by dry eyes syndrome.  A condition that is defined as the chronic lack of lubrication or moisture in the eye.

When patients experience dry eyes, their eyes are irritated and can feel a constant foreign body sensation.  More serious symptoms include ocular inflammation of the tissues of the eye.

To treat common eye dryness, Dr. Feldman recommends using non-preserved tear drops as a lubricating ointment at bedtime.  A more serious condition might be treated with Restasis, which acts to increase tears.

If drops do not help alleviate the dryness, we can insert small devices known as punctual plugs into one’s tear ducts to retain moisture in the eye.

If you think you have dry eyes, contact us for an appointment.

Is LASIK right for you?

To find out if LASIK or laser vision correction is right for you, we will need to do a thorough eye exam. Other requirements include:
  • A patient should be at least 21 years of age with a stable prescription
  • Discontinue wearing soft contact lenses for a minimum of three to fourteen days prior to surgery
  • Hard or rigid type contact lenses will need to be removed so the eyes stablize before surgery, this usually takes four to six weeks
  • Have no general health or eye conditions that will cause issues with the healing process

Can LASIK keep my eyes from changing?

LASIK is not recommended if your prescription is changing and your vision has not stabilized. This is common if you are in your teens or even in your early 20s. The procedure will not stabilize your eyes. This is why we perform a thorough eye examination during your consultation in order to determine if your prescription is stable.
