Q) I’m 48 and my doctor tells me I have presbyopia. Do I have vision correction options or will I be stuck with reading glasses for the rest of my life?

A) For individuals over 40 and having reading difficulties, you have a few vision correction options.  If you are interested in LASIK, blended vision may be the best option to enable you to see both distance and read. For other individuals, implantable lenses similar to bifocals, can be inserted into the eye.  The best way to determine which procedure is right for you, is to seek the care of an eye doctor specializing in these procedures.

Presbyopia happens as we age, meaning that between the ages of 40 - 45 our near vision diminishes. Most people find they need to wear reading glasses for the fine print. The crystalline lens inside the eye, behind the pupil loses flexibility and is no longer able to focus on objects that are up close. Sometimes patients with myopia or nearsightedness are able to remove their distance glasses and see up close. This is because their eye is too long and acts like a magnifying glass.

As recently reported, patients are switching between bifocals for presbyopia, the over 40 years old aging eyes problem, mid-range to now read on the computer and often another set of glasses to drive or engage in outdoor activities. This seems like  too many different glasses to keep track of, it’s hard enough to always reach for one pair when needed let alone three. As mention in our previous discussion, there are advanced intraocular implantable lens that replace the aging lens known as the crystalline lens in the eye.

As we age, our eyesight begins to change due to the natural lenses’ lose of flexibility. This condition is called presybopia and begins to be noticeable in our forties or fifties. Symptoms of presbyopia include difficulty-seeing things up close, for example reading a restaurant menu or the newspaper. While there is no cure for presbyopia, there are vision correction options that can help you improve your reading vision. Monovision correction is one such solution.

There are many vision correction options for patients with presbyopia, a natural aging eye condition that affects reading vision. They include: Monovision Contact Lenses: These specialized lenses are prescribed so one lens corrects reading vision, while the other lens corrects distance vision. Monovision LASIK: presbyopic vision issues can be addressed with Wavefront-guided LASIK. Dr. Sandy T. Feldman can reshape the cornea of one eye for excellent distance vision and the other eye for excellent reading or near vision.

Patients with presbyopia are often looking for ways to help correct their reading vision. Presbyopia is a natural aging-eye condition that begins to affect patients in their 40s or 50s. As a person ages the natural lens of the eye becomes less flexible, which reduces their ability to see things up close. For example, reading a menu or a label on a bottle may be difficult.
