Botox is the product name for a form of the botulinum toxin. The FDA approved it in April, 2002 for treating frown lines.

How Botox works

Botox is a muscle-relaxing agent for therapeutic use. Injections of Botox® block nerve impulses in the area of the injection, for a few months. That prevents the muscles in that area from contracting. Since they don’t contract, they don’t form any wrinkles in the skin that covers them.

The effect of this is smoother skin.

Areas where Botox is useful

The most popular areas are:

• Frown lines
• Crows feet
• Forehead wrinkles

An injection of Botox® inhibits wrinkle formation for about three months, and then must be repeated.
