What is LASIK?

LASIK, which is the acronym for ‘laser assisted in situ keratomileusis,’ is the most commonly performed laser vision correction procedure for patients suffering from nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

History of LASIK

San Diego Custom LASIK Surgery Patients

The FDA first approved laser vision correction in the US in 1995. . Now the laser technology for LASIK has improved to the point where the results are phenomenal.  Each patient’s treatment is so precise and customized that, following custom LASIK, it is common for vision to be better than it had been while wearing glasses or contact lenses.

How Custom LASIK Works

  • Using the most advanced LASIK technology available, Dr. Feldman is able improve your vision by re-shaping your cornea with highly precise beams of laser light so your eye refracts light more precisely onto your retina. Dr. Feldman will first make a digital map of the unique imperfections of your eyes through a computer-mapping program called the WaveScan wavefront system. Wavefront, which uses the same technology as a high-powered telescope, is 25 times more precise than the 150 year old machine most commonly used to prescribe eyeglasses and contacts.
  • She’ll then transfer this sophisticated 3D map, or “fingerprint” of your vision, to the VISX  excimer laser used in your LASIK procedure – completely customizing the procedure to fit your exact vision needs.  This procedure is known as CustomVue.
  • Next, Dr. Feldman will make a thin surface flap on the cornea to expose the tissue underneath.
  • Once she has created the flap, Dr. Feldman will use our state-of-the-art wavefront-guided excimer laser to precisely reshape your corneal tissue so you can see all the details of your life even better than before.

Once Dr. Feldman has reshaped your cornea to optimize your vision, your eye’s ability to focus light onto the retina will be greatly improved. The result is extremely clear vision the majority of the time without the aid or hassle of contacts or glasses.

Dear Dr. Feldman:
The laser procedure I had over 4 years still has me seeing 20/20 today. Everyone told me when I hit 40, my near sighted vision would begin to fade. Now at 42, I can see as clearly as I did after the laser surgery.

Thank you for changing my vision.

How the LASIK Flap is Created

Dr. Sandy T. Feldman uses two methods to create the corneal flap.

The microkeratome is the original method used in LASIK surgery.  It is a hand-held semi-automated mechanical device that moves back and forth very rapidly.

The innovative technique for creating the flap utilizes a laser, IntraLase®.  The IntraLase laser works in extremely fast little bursts of energy, little pulses of light which shine through the eye’s surface to a predetermined microscopic depth. Each pulse of light creates a tiny bubble below the surface, and they accumulate until they’ve covered the entire treatment area, enabling a separation flap of the inner layers of the cornea.

Dr. Feldman has excellent outcomes using both flap techniques.
