The Future of Presbyopia Technology
Serving San Diego and Southern California
As of today, there is no laser vision correction (LVC) procedure approved to completely treat presbyopia, a condition that makes it difficult for patients to read and focus clearly on nearby objects. However, there has been extensive research and testing to evaluate different ways of reshaping the cornea to create the multifocality (ability to see both far and near) presbyopia patients need.
VISX , a global standard for laser vision technology has investigated how presbyopia can be treated with laser eye surgery and has researched reports that laser vision correction for hyperopia (farsightedness), has improved presbyopia in some patients.
Using the VISX WaveFront system to map a multifocal ablation profile for each clinical trial patient has indicated that a multifocal LASIK procedure is safe and effective for treating presbyopia, causing no loss in overall visual acuity or sharpness. Once this technology can be fully honed and tested for long-term safety, it is very likely that presbyopia will be effectively treated using laser vision correction in the future.
