My wife and I debated over who was going to write this thank you note.  She’s convinced she should get the honor because you’ve spared her getting squashed at least once a night when I would lean across her, squinting my eyes for a full thirty seconds, trying desperately to decipher the red, fuzzy blobs, which I knew were supposed to be numbers on our alarm clock.  However, I think it’s only fair that I get to thank the doctor who has literally changed my life.  Not only can I read the alarm clock at night, but I can see it crystal clear from all the way down the hall!

Dear Dr. Feldman:

I wanted to express my deep appreciation for restoring my sight to a level that is constantly amazing to me, and for which I am thankful for every day. To fully appreciate what I am saying, here is my story.

I have had to wear glasses since I was seven years old, and probably needed them before even that time. When I turned 17, I took the plunge and got hard contact lenses. A big step forward, but literally a pain in the eye. Soft contacts followed many years later, and I would still be wearing them to this day if not for my left eye, which after 30 years of contact lens abuse, refused to allow me to wear them anymore. So it was back to glasses, which was not easy after being "spoiled" with contacts for so many years.

I had considered LASIK, but held out as long as I could, hoping that technology would make the process safer and more accurate. Now I started my investigation in earnest, researching the various lasers, reading technical papers, visiting LASIK centers, and getting recommendations from friends & coworkers. These were my eyes, and I wanted to make the best possible decision.

I had gotten a number of recommendations for Dr. Sandy T. Feldman, and when I went in for the exam, she impressed me with her straight talk and her dedication to perfection. I had determined that I would not settle for anything less than custom LASIK, but since my eyes were so nearsighted and had a good amount of astigmatism (-7.75 +1.50x90), she confirmed my suspicions that I was outside the bounds of custom LASIK. Even if I was within the bounds, I would probably need two procedures, my eyes were that bad.

So she outlined an approach that would have me undergo conventional LASIK the first time, to get me within the zone, then follow up with custom LASIK to get me as close to perfect as possible. The first procedure happened in January 2005, with the second in May 2005. Now here it is a year and a half later, and I still have 20/20 vision. It truly is a miracle, and Dr. Feldman is the reason.

If you're like me, go ahead and do the research on lasers, clinical trials, certifications, and visit some LASIK practices you've gotten personal recommendations for. Then visit Dr. Feldman, and you'll find the very best equipment, along with a support staff that is fantastic. Dear Sandy:

As you can see from the enclosed photo, I was back to operating under the microscope within a week of my LASIK surgery. I have had no problems since the first day! My sight is unbelievable! I had become so contact lens intolerant. I was resigned to wearing glasses full-time. It is absolutely heaven to be able to see without glasses and without the pain and aggravation from my contact lenses.

The most amazing part of my new vision is what happened on a recent vacation in Key West. For the first time in my life, I was able to spontaneously jump into the swimming pool and play with my daughter without having to worry about my contact lenses. And, when I swam, I could actually see where I was going. This surgery has given me a freedom I didn't imagine was possible.

As you know, for so long, I refused to have LASIK. The only reason I went ahead was that you were performing it. Why did you decide to have laser vision correction?

When I realized that it was almost too-difficult-and even dangerous-to drive without using my prescription lenses. Although I barely passed the DMV eye test the last time I took it nearly four years ago, I could tell that my eyesight had been getting worse since then. If I had taken the same test before my surgery, I couldn't have passed it without glasses.

My degenerating eyesight was also affecting my career as a professional skateboarder. It was getting increasingly difficult to judge distance and clarity on skating obstacles and surfaces.

I always avoided using contact lenses because I had seen the constant hassles that people who used them went through. Once I heard about corrective laser surgery, I knew I would eventually want it.

What was the experience like?

It was extremely quick. I remember focusing on a red light for a brief time while hearing a clicking noise. Basically, all I did was lay back and stare straight ahead. The entire procedure lasted less than 10 minutes. As I left the office, I looked up and I could read the road signs on the other side of the street. It was already successful, and the healing process had just started.

How has laser vision correction changed your life?

Everything is in focus: trees, signs, movies, television, ramps, menus and even people. I can now recognize someone without having to get close to them. My wife no longer catches me squinting or has to reprimand me for not wearing my glasses. I can wear any sunglasses I want without having to worry if they are made to fit prescription lenses. I have become justification for all my friends and family that laser corrective surgery works wonders.

I now have a freedom that I never thought was possible!

Dear Dr. Sandy Feldman,

Thank you for guiding me through my maze of solutions to my LASIK problems- these seven months.

I first came to you a month after my LASIK. I was blind. My corneas were inflamed (Keratitis) and the vision was gone, I could only see dark or foggy. I lost time from work and went on State Disability Insurance. And I was unhappy!

My original LASIK surgeon, who advertises too much, offers discounts, and does a high volume of LASIK, did not know what to do. He sent me off to his former office mate (and possible partner?), claiming I was his first failure, and he did not have experience with flap problems. He said he did not understand what went wrong. A lot of other things came out of the original surgeon's mouth which were not true. He claimed he had never lost a LASIK flap yet, but he was telling me I might need to have "thin cornea transplants." I went to his Alma Matter University and was seen by the Doctor/Teacher who signed his diploma. I soon realized they were not the guys to get me fixed. I felt outnumbered, but got away from that gang. Due to a high volume of LASIK performed, I suspect I did not get proper Pre- and Post-Operation care. I've found other LASIK victims on the net. An old saying seems to fit here:

“You get what you pay for”

Therefore, I went searching for another eye-specialist. I had been to about a dozen Doctors about this, and I am glad I stuck it out with you. You tried to keep me from becoming too frustrated as I waited these past long, very long months to recover some vision. It has been a real pain; I hate being like this. I have had to re-evaluate what is important, and control my emotions. You are a good listener, advisor, coach & mentor.

I now have vision in one eye, with the use of corrective lenses. The jury is still out on the second eye, but I hope this latest repair surgery (#6) works. The vision is not perfect, nor as good as the original surgeon promised me, but I am beginning to get back to a normal life.

As an optometrist, I have been more aware of the risks and benefits of refractive surgery than most of your patients. Consequently, although I have been eager to have refractive surgery, I have also been hesitant until recently when I had the pleasure to observe your post-LASIK patients. The lack of haze and the refractive results of the procedure were excellent.

Since my surgery I have been able to enjoy sports without being encumbered by contacts or glasses. Golfing and skiing are now more enjoyable. Another new benefit is swimming. I am able to see in the pool.

Can I just start off by saying how AMAZING this is to see what I am typing without contact or glasses? I have been wearing one or the other for 16 years now, and now nothing! I was 20/200 in my right eye and 20/400 in my other, right now, I can see 20/20. It’s only been 3 days since my Lasik surgery. I can’t believe the incredible results! As a photographer, seeing is everything! I know that my career itself hinges on this fact. The need to see detail and things in sharp focus is a regular part of the job. Because of that, there is no greater need that my eyes work at the best possible level. Wow! As an employee and a patient it’s an amazing feeling to not have to worry about contact lenses or glasses! I was a little nervous at first about going through the procedure but you talked me through the whole process and re-assured me that everything was going great. It’s almost two months now since you performed cataract surgery on my right eye. During the first few weeks the transformation has been amazing.

I would like to thank you, Dr. Luna and all of your professional staff for my new ClearView of everyday life. You began my experience by explaining to me  the entire process and recommended three lens options for my eye. It was a no brainer for me. I chose the best option, the CRYSTALENS.

I recently bought a new big screen, high definition TV, but looking at it with cataracts in both eyes was no improvement. Now with the surgery performed on my right eye the TV now has the “WOW EFFECT.” The CRYSTALENS, I now look through gives me the intense color and extremely sharp viewing detail. When I go outside and look at my Koi pond, I cover my left eye that has cataracts and the view through the new right eye is amazing. The colors of the fish, the details of the leaves of my plants, the grain in the new deck boards, the “DETAILS POP.”

My problem now is when I cover my new right eye and look only through the bad left eye my vision is terrible, blurry, distorted badly. I’ve decided to keep the economy flowing and have scheduled you to perform surgery on my left eye on November 20, 2006. When you take the bandage off on November 21st You can say Happy Birthday Tony.

I am now 20/15 with no negative effects! Thank you so much!
