Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Dark circles under the eyes refer to the appearance of discoloration or shadowing beneath the eyes, which can give a tired or aged look. While often associated with fatigue, dark circles can also result from other factors such as genetics, allergies, thinning skin, and lifestyle choices.

  • Causes: The most common causes of dark circles include lack of sleep, dehydration, and stress, which can cause blood vessels under the thin skin of the eyes to become more visible. Genetics can also play a role, as some people are predisposed to darker pigmentation around the eyes. Allergies, sinus congestion, and excessive rubbing of the eyes can also contribute to dark circles. Additionally, the natural aging process causes the skin to thin, making underlying blood vessels more noticeable.
  • Symptoms: Dark circles are characterized by a shadowed or discolored appearance under the eyes, which may range from light brown to dark purple or blue. They are often accompanied by puffiness or a hollowed-out look, especially as people age and lose volume in the area around the eyes.
  • Treatment: Treatment for dark circles depends on the underlying cause. Getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and managing stress can help reduce the appearance of dark circles. Topical treatments with ingredients like caffeine, vitamin K, or retinol may help constrict blood vessels and improve skin texture. For more persistent cases, cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels, laser therapy, or dermal fillers can provide long-term improvements.
