Eye Pain

Eye pain can range from mild discomfort to severe, stabbing sensations and may affect one or both eyes. The pain may be felt on the surface of the eye or deeper within. Surface pain is often related to irritants, infections, or injuries, while deeper pain may be caused by conditions affecting the eye's internal structures. Eye pain can indicate a variety of underlying issues, from minor irritations like dryness to more serious conditions like glaucoma or corneal abrasions. Eye pain should not be ignored, as it may signal an urgent condition requiring immediate attention.

  • Causes: Common causes of eye pain include dry eye, infections (e.g., conjunctivitis), foreign objects in the eye, corneal abrasions, contact lens problems, eye strain, and conditions like glaucoma, uveitis, or optic neuritis.
  • Symptoms: Eye pain can be accompanied by redness, swelling, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, headache, tearing, or discharge. Depending on the cause, the pain may worsen with eye movement or blinking.
  • Treatment: Treatment depends on the underlying cause. For minor irritations or dryness, lubricating eye drops or artificial tears may relieve symptoms. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics, while more severe conditions like glaucoma require specific medical interventions such as eye drops to lower intraocular pressure or surgery. In cases of eye trauma or severe pain, immediate medical attention is necessary.
