Am I a candidate for Cataract Surgery?

When is it Time for Vision Restoration Surgery?

At ClearView Eye & Laser Medical Center, Dr. Sandy T. Feldman specializes in advanced ophthalmology techniques to restore your sight. You are likely a strong candidate for cataract removal if you are experiencing:

  • Consistently blurry or cloudy vision
  • Severe difficulty seeing at night
  • Intense glare, haloes, or starbursts around headlights and streetlamps
  • Colors appearing muted, faded, or yellowed
  • Double vision in a single eye

Can I Have Cataract Surgery After Previous Eye Procedures?

Many patients who have undergone previous refractive surgeries wonder if they still qualify for modern cataract treatments.

Cataract Surgery After LASIK or PRK

Yes, you can absolutely have cataract surgery if you have had LASIK or PRK in the past. Because these procedures reshaped your cornea, Dr. Feldman will perform specialized diagnostic testing and precise calculations to ensure the correct Intraocular Lens (IOL) power is selected for your unique eye anatomy.

Upgrading Older IOL Implants

If you had cataract surgery years ago before advanced premium IOLs (like multifocal or toric lenses) were available, you may be a candidate to undergo a secondary IOL implant or adjustment to further rejuvenate your vision.

Preparing for Your Consultation: Medical History And Medications

To derive the maximum value from your evaluation, a thorough review of your medical history is required. Certain medications can impact your candidacy and surgical approach. For example, tamsulosin (Flomax) can affect the muscle tone of the iris, making cataract removal more complex. Corticosteroids can also accelerate cataract formation. Please bring a complete list of all current medications and written medical records to your appointment.

Information

Cataracts can initially be treated with the aid of glasses or contact lenses. However, because cataracts are a progressive condition, you will probably need vision restoration surgery when your vision declines to the point where it interferes with your ability to perform daily tasks safely and effectively. Common symptoms at this point include blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, glare, haloes, and starbursts around lights. Colors may appear muted and you might experience double vision.

Many patients who've undergone previous procedures wonder if they are candidates for cataract surgery. If you had cataract surgery before IOLs were available, you can undergo a secondary IOL implant. If you previously underwent LASIK, additional tests may be required. Records from your previous eye surgery are helpful in determining your current course of treatment. Our office will help you obtain your records so that you can derive maximum value from your consultation.

To further help you get the most out of your consultation please:

  • Review your medical history. If you have written records, please bring them with you to your appointment.
  • Create a list of medications that you are taking. Some medications that can contribute to cataracts include corticosteroids and others such as tamsulosin [Flomax], may make cataract removal more difficult.
