TECNIS PureSee IOL (Johnson & Johnson) in San Diego

Dr Feldman and Dr. Mathison:

See Clearly at Every Distance, Without Sacrificing Visual Quality

The TECNIS PureSee IOL is the newest FDA-approved intraocular lens from Johnson & Johnson, and Clearview Eye and Laser Medical Center is one of the first practices in San Diego to offer it.

Designed for patients undergoing cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange, PureSee gives you a genuine range of vision spanning distance, intermediate, and near, while maintaining the sharp, high-contrast clarity that patients have always valued in traditional lenses. It's the first and only FDA-approved extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL with no warning on loss of contrast sensitivity.

What Makes TECNIS PureSee Different

Most premium lenses ask you to make a tradeoff. Multifocal lenses extend your range but can introduce halos and glare, particularly at night. Standard EDOF lenses reduce those disturbances but have historically carried a warning about reduced contrast sensitivity, which affects how clearly you see in low-light situations like driving after dark or navigating a dimly lit space.

TECNIS PureSee was built to close that gap. It's a purely refractive EDOF lens, meaning it creates an extended focal range without relying on diffraction rings that scatter light and cause visual symptoms. In the clinical trial that supported FDA approval:

  • 97% of patients reported no very bothersome visual disturbances like halos or glare
  • 97% said they would recommend the lens to a friend or family member

Contrast sensitivity was comparable to a standard aspheric monofocal IOL, an industry first for an EDOF lens

Nearly 500,000 eyes globally had already been treated with PureSee before it received U.S. FDA approval in March 2026.

What to Expect: The TECNIS PureSee Procedure

TECNIS PureSee is implanted during a standard cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. The procedure itself typically takes 15 to 20 minutes per eye and is performed on an outpatient basis.

Before Surgery: You'll have a thorough consultation with Dr. Feldman or Dr. Mathison to confirm candidacy, measure your eye, and discuss your vision goals. Accurate measurements are key to selecting the right lens power for your lifestyle.

The Day of Surgery: Your natural lens is gently removed using a technique called phacoemulsification, and the TECNIS PureSee IOL is folded and placed through a small incision into the same space. No stitches are required. Most patients go home within a couple of hours.

Recovery: Vision begins improving within the first 24 to 48 hours, though it may continue to refine over the following weeks as your eye heals. Most patients are back to normal daily activities within a few days. Full stabilization typically occurs within four to six weeks.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may be a good fit for TECNIS PureSee if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with a cataract, or are considering refractive lens exchange to reduce dependence on glasses
  • Want a wide range of functional vision after surgery, including distance and intermediate
  • Have less than 1 diopter of corneal astigmatism (or greater than 1 diopter and interested in the Toric version)
  • Are bothered by nighttime visual disturbances with other premium lens options
  • Want to minimize glasses use for most daily activities

TECNIS PureSee is available in a standard version and a Toric II version for patients with astigmatism. Your surgeon will determine which is the better match based on your corneal measurements.

Why Choose Clearview for TECNIS PureSee

Clearview is among the first clinics in the San Diego area to offer TECNIS PureSee, which only received FDA approval in March 2026. Dr. Sandy T. Feldman and Dr. Michael L. Mathison have decades of combined experience in advanced lens surgery and are committed to offering patients the most current, evidence-based technology available.

If PureSee isn't the right fit for your eyes, we'll tell you that and recommend the lens that is, whether that's the Light Adjustable Lens, TECNIS Odyssey, TECNIS Eyhance, or another option from our full premium IOL portfolio. Our goal is the right outcome for your vision, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Risks and Safety

Cataract surgery and IOL implantation are among the safest surgical procedures performed, but as with any surgery, risks exist. These may include infection, inflammation, temporary visual disturbances, or the need for a follow-up procedure. TECNIS PureSee is designed for distance vision and will not eliminate the need for reading glasses in all patients. Some patients, particularly those in their late 40s and 50s, may still require glasses for certain close-up tasks.

We'll review your individual risk profile in detail at your consultation and answer every question before you make any decision.

Frequently Asked Questions About TECNIS PureSee

Q1: Will I still need reading glasses with the PureSee IOL?

Ans: The PureSee lens is designed to give you flawless distance and intermediate (arm's length) vision. While many patients find they can read standard text without glasses, you may still prefer a light pair of reading glasses for very fine print or reading in dark environments.

Q2: How is PureSee different from the TECNIS Symfony or Odyssey?

Ans: While both are excellent lenses, the PureSee is specifically engineered for patients who prioritize driving at night without glare or halos, and who want the absolute highest contrast sensitivity in low-light environments.

Q3: Is the TECNIS PureSee covered by Medicare or insurance?

Ans: Standard cataract surgery is covered by Medicare and most major insurances. However, because the TECNIS PureSee is an advanced "premium" technology lens that corrects presbyopia and astigmatism, there is an out-of-pocket upgrade cost for the lens itself. We offer flexible financing plans to make this permanent vision upgrade affordable.
